Letter to the Editor
I am a practicing dermatologist with an interest in dermatopathology. I use a Nikon Coolpix 950 digital camera for many clinical pictures. One day I held it up to the eye piece of my microscope and -- viola-- it was able to take a photomicrograph rivaling that taken with very expensive mountings. The only problem was it had to be held very steady. I looked for a type of mounting to hold it and even consulted a machine tool maker, but to no avail. Finally I found a $1.65 garden hose clamp that held it perfectly when I put a little Velcro around the eye piece. I can use this setup to take photomicrographs and present them in Powerpoint to colleagues at meetings or over the Internet. With a digital camera and a hose clamp, we can now have easy to shoot, affordable "photomicrography for the great multitude."
