International Dermatology Training Program Announced by the Department of Dermatology, Harvard Medical School
BOSTON, MA. October 30, 2000
An advanced program, designed for foreign students in the field of dermatology, was announced here today by Dr. Ivor Caro, director of the International Training Program in Dermatology (ITPD) in the Department of Dermatology at the Harvard Medical School. The program's goal is designed to enhance the level of dermatological knowledge and care worldwide, resulting in graduates taking their advanced learning and training skills back to their respective countries.
"New diseases, techniques and medicines are all contributing factors for the need of skilled physicians," said Dr. Caro. "This is one of the reasons this program has been put into place, allowing students to learn from some of the leading dermatologists in the world."
According to Dr. Caro, there are three programs: (1) A six-month program for foreign-trained dermatologists, (2) A one-year program designed for non-dermatologists, who are medical school graduates from developing countries, whose resources for training are limited, but where significant need exists, and (3) A two-year program for both dermatologists and non- dermatologists. This includes clinical training in the one-year program, coupled with a second year in-depth, directed basic or clinical research. All three are fee-based programs with costs depending on the duration of the studies.
A Harvard-wide endeavor, the ITPD's participating affiliates include Beth- Israel-Deaconess Medical Center, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Cambridge Hospital, Children's Hospital Medical Center, Lahey Clinic and Massachusetts General Hospital.
According to Dr. Caro, students will participate in teaching conferences, observe in clinical situations, and interact with faculty, residents and fellows of the Department of Dermatology. "Recent advances in dermatological research, diagnosis, and therapy are discussed in an exciting and stimulating environment," said Dr. Caro. "The learning process won't stop at graduation. We expect the relationships developed during their stay at Harvard will translate into long-term cooperation via teledermatology and video conferencing over the Internet, as well as through personal contacts at meetings and conventions. These students will become part of the worldwide Harvard dermatology community."
Located in Boston, Massachusetts, Harvard Medical School is one of the world's preeminent institutions in medical education and research. At the core of the institution is their educational and research program. The School has nearly 8,000 faculty and 17 affiliated facilities. The Department of Dermatology is a joint multi-institutional teaching and training program with cooperative clinical and research activities at nine teaching hospitals and affiliations. A large number of individuals who have trained in the department have become leaders in their respective specialty, and are known for their roles in research, teaching and clinical care.
